the sweet low whisper

the sweet low whisper by vic abbott

I asked the Lord what I should do, desiring His will or so I thought.
“Should I do this? Should I do that?” His silence frustrating as I sought.
“All I have and all I do, I desire to give to You;
—tell me where You’d have me go and what You’d have me do!”
Surely some great plan or noble deed; a great work for THE MOST HIGH.
But then a sweet low whisper –
“Deny yourself, take up your cross, follow me,” was His reply.

“I know that is a starting point”, my response was just that quick,
“But Lord I’d think it better if you were more specific.”
“All I have and all I do, I desire to give to You;
—tell me where You’d have me go and what You’d have me do!”
Foreign lands don’t scare me if that is where I’m lead.
And then that sweet low whisper –
“Love me with all your heart, and others as yourself,” is all He said.

“Yes Lord, the Great Command and I truly try to keep it.
But a vision I could follow would help me better demonstrate it!
All I have and all I do, I desire to give to You;
—tell me where You’d have me go and what You’d have me do!”
I could preach to thousands, until sinful hearts were broke.
But then that sweet low whisper –
“Serve them as you would serve me,” He gently spoke.

“Lord, it is my desire that I should GO and DO,
That great actions and my work would serve to glorify you.
All I have and all I do, I desire to give to You;
—tell me where You’d have me go and what You’d have me do!”
No sacrifice is too great, I’ll let nothing stand in my way.
Once again His sweet low whisper –
“Do all to the glory of God,” I hear Him say.

Lord I think I see and I begin to understand,
You’re not saying go and do, but be Yours wherever I am.
O Lord, I could have missed your glory as I looked for a better plan,
When all along You simply ask to trust you with the work at hand.
All I have and all I do I simply give to You.
Now when the sweet low whisper comes
As His glory alone I seek,
I will know the Father’s voice when I hear Him speak.
